80% of the information we receive when driving comes through our eyes. For this reason, the correct regulation of the lighting system is essential to see enough without dazzling other drivers.

The right height

Periodically check the height of the headlights, position lights, turn signals and brakes. If the headlights are set too high, you will dazzle others, especially when the vehicle is loaded. On the other hand, if the headlights are set too low, there is a lack of visibility, which is accentuated when braking and increases visual fatigue.

Another aspect to take into account is the fixing of the lamps and headlamps, because if they are poorly fixed they can generate vibrations that will eventually destroy your lamp.

Earth in Sight

If the headlights or optics are dirty, the illumination distance and the distance from which it is seen are reduced. Just a layer of dust can reduce efficiency by 10%. Therefore, keep the lenses clean to allow good visibility and avoid reflections and glare. Some vehicles are equipped with a headlight washer system that,

activated by the driver, keeps the surface clean. In addition, make sure that moisture and condensation do not accumulate inside the headlights and optics because they can also impair the operation of these elements.

Intensity and efficiency

It is advisable to check the intensity of the lights and replace the lamp if it is deficient. This preventive practice will allow you to have optimum visibility at all times and you will not be surprised by a sudden lamp failure. Therefore, if one of them should fail to work, both should be replaced, as replacing only one would result in uneven illumination.

The average life of a battery can be, in a pessimistic scenario, around two years, and with a much more optimistic view it could reach five years. This is why following some basic care tips we can keep it in optimal conditions and save, at least for a while, about 10,000 to 15,000 pesos, which is the current cost of a new battery, which may vary depending on the brand and model.

  1. Avoid parking in places with extreme temperatures.

It is normal for cars to run out of battery power in winter due to the cold, but high temperatures also reduce their useful life. Try to avoid parking outdoors below 5ºC and above 30ºC for more than five hours.

  1. Start by pressing the clutch

In this way, the battery will only have to start the engine and will make as little effort as possible. If the clutch is not depressed, you will also have to unnecessarily move part of the transmission system.

  1. Be careful with electrical installations

If you install any electrical accessory in the car -for example, a more powerful audio system or daytime running lights-, it is very important that all the cables and connections are perfectly insulated. Otherwise, with the engine stopped, small discharges will occur that will reduce the life of the battery. It should also be taken into account what power the installed elements consume, since it could be necessary to install a battery of greater capacity so that it does not run out before it should -consult in your workshop.

  1. Do not connect systems that are not necessary

When the engine is running, it is the alternator that supplies electricity to the vehicle. However, if many electrical systems are connected, there may come a time when the alternator does not have sufficient capacity, so the battery would have to ‘help’… and its useful life would be reduced. However, this problem is very rare in current models.

  1. Avoid short trips

The moment in which the battery suffers a greater effort is in the starting, and it needs several minutes so that the alternator can recharge it again. Short journeys at low revolutions will prevent the alternator from charging it correctly, reducing its average life.

  1. If you have the car stopped for a long time

Even if the car is stationary, the battery tends to discharge. For that reason, it is advisable to start it at least once every 10 days. If the vehicle is going to remain stationary for a longer period of time, it may be worthwhile to disconnect the battery -just remove the negative terminal and make sure that it does not rub against any metal element-; however, when you reconnect it, you will have to insert the radio’s security code and, sometimes, you will have to go to the garage to reset fault codes in safety systems such as airbags. Remember, though, that even if it is completely disconnected, the battery will end up discharging in the long run – it will be difficult to last more than two years.

  1. Starts with everything off if the battery is weak

If when you turn on the ignition you notice that the battery has a harder time starting the engine than usual, it is advisable to go to a garage to change it or, if it is not in very bad condition, to recharge it. Even so, and until you do it, you can make the battery’s work easier if you avoid starting the car with the radio on, the air conditioning on, the lights on…

  1. If the engine is stopped, do not connect anything.

Remaining inside the car with the engine stopped and with the interior lights on, or listening to the radio, also reduces battery life, especially when the battery is no longer at its best or if it is very cold. Avoid it if it is not necessary

  1. Keep an eye on the terminals

Sometimes a white crust can form on the terminals of the battery; it is necessary to eliminate it, because it reduces its useful life. For it, it is necessary to remove all the remainders with a metallic brush, water and bicarbonate. Then, to protect the terminals with neutral petroleum jelly.

  1. If it has maintenance

Although they are less and less used, still exist batteries with maintenance – it is indicated in the own battery -, that need to refill the water that they contain in the interior – it evaporates -. For it, once a year, you will have to remove the six plugs that there are between the terminals and, if the water level is low, to refill it to the maximum. Use only distilled water, as tap water contains mineral salts that will reduce the life of the battery.

6 Steps You Should Follow to Carry Your Pet in The Car https://autotekne.com/en/6-steps-you-should-follow-to-carry-your-pet-in-the-car/ https://autotekne.com/en/6-steps-you-should-follow-to-carry-your-pet-in-the-car/#comments Fri, 10 Sep 2021 22:43:14 +0000 https://autotekne.com/?p=2083 Being able to enjoy a day outdoors after such a long isolation is the wish of many families, and pets are part of our family. Follow these tips to have a safe trip and have a great time with your dog or cat away from home.
With the arrival of spring and the relaxation of the quarantine, going out for a drive or traveling to a park to enjoy the sunny days is becoming commonplace in this new normality that we are learning to live in.
Let us remember that if we decide to leave home, we must do so taking all health precautions to avoid contagion. Although there are fewer restrictions, this does not mean that the chances of contracting the Covid-19 virus have decreased.
Being able to enjoy a day outdoors after such a long isolation is the desire of many families, and pets are part of our family. That is why we must also take all the necessary precautions so that they can travel in the safest way and reduce risks as much as possible.
It should be clarified that although from the legal point of view, the National Traffic Law 24.449 only states in its article 48, paragraph q: “that no load or element that disturbs visibility or exceeds the allowed limits must be transported”; the provinces do regulate this issue. Such is the case in the province of Buenos Aires through article 64, paragraph 4, of law 13.637, which states: “no driver may carry animals in the front seat” and clarifies that “they must be transported in the back seat and tied with straps so that they cannot jump to the front seat”.
In order to meet the requirements of the regulations, there are various types of products on the market for transporting both dogs and cats, which are attached to the original passenger seat belt system or to the seat fastening bolts.

These include the following items:

  • Single hitch harness
  • Harness with two hitches
  • Dividing grid
  • Cat carrier
  • Kennel

Step by step:

  1. If it is the first time that the pet is taken by car, we must begin by making short tests so that the animal gets used to it, does not get dizzy or nervous. These “micro-trips” should be done varying the speed of the car and going to places that the dog or cat enjoys going to, such as a square or a park. If they are not accustomed gradually, especially as children, they will not have a very good time when we want to make a longer trip.
  2. To get the cat used to the carrier, “before traveling, it is important to leave it open and at its disposal within its territory,” says Hernán Pesis, educator and feline behaviorist in the newspaper La Nación; then, hang a ball of sisal yarn from the hole in the car door and, through play, generate positive associations. This way, habituation is faster. When he is inside and comfortable, we can try closing the door.
  3. If the trip is planned, it is advisable for the animal to fast for at least six hours to avoid vomiting and dizziness in the cabin. Also, before starting the trip, it is recommended that they take a walk so that they can relieve themselves.
  4. For long journeys we have to equip ourselves a little more. First of all, we must provide them with the same food they are consuming, but in less quantity so that they do not suffer gastrointestinal problems. We must also include water, bags and cleaning elements, in addition to scheduling stops for them to drink, walk and relieve themselves. In the case of carrying a cat, make sure it is comfortable and has water available in the carrier.
  5. Always remember that the animals must be placed in the back seat, on a blanket and -as we have detailed- secured with safety accessories, so that they do not move in the event of sudden braking.
  6. The passenger compartment of the vehicle must have an adequate temperature and if the pets are anxious, it is advisable to pet them and talk to them to reduce their anxiety. Cats should always travel in a carrier, with a familiar object and an absorbent blanket to prevent them from getting wet in case they urinate. The carrier should be fixed to the seat belt so that it does not move.
